The Slums in Dhaka, Bangladesh
Dhaka: The Slums of Bangladesh
General Information of Slum
Originally a Slum was mainly called "back slum" in which they referred to a back room, later called a "back alley."
Now Slums are usually called shanty town, favela, skid row, and ghetto.
The origin of this word is thought to come from the Irish phrase '
S lom é
(pron. s'lum ae) meaning 'exposed vulnerable place.
Problems related to growth:
Bangladesh has 3.4 million people living in 511 slums in the capital city; Dhaka. Habitation in the slums was due to economic migration from 93% of the residence in the slums. Also in these slums 81% have not been educated. The slums are in desperate need of help from the rest of the world in order to solve their problems. Living in a slum has had both social and health consequences. Many have migrated to Dhaka for economic reasons. This data is needed to require in order to create strategies that will help the slums. The number of beggars in Dhaka has recently risen so high that begging in the streets has become banned and punishable with a month-long stay in jail. Migrants have been flooding into Dhaka after losing their homes and land, only to find that there are no jobs available in the slums, as well as very sparse housing, medical care, and options for schools. The average life expectancy in Bangladesh is 60.2 years old, which is ab
out 18 years younger than the average life expectancy in the United States.
Projections for the future:
DWASA stands for Dhaka Water Supply and Sewerage Authority. As of right now there is no proper plans for water distribution, they are trying to make master plans so that they have a major plan for water distribution to all the cities.
If the urban air pollution is is reduced by 20% to 8%, it would save 1,200 to 3,500 lives annually. It would also avoid 83 to 230 million disease.
Raising the percent of the economic growth by planning out their harvests with economic planners.
Does Dhaka need intervention?
If other countries help Dhaka with the organization of water distribution and air pollution, it will significantly reduce the risk of disease and death by unhealthy living conditions. Economic growth and planning is necessary for Dhaka's slums in order to save lives and create a healthier and safer environment.
Step by step Improvement Plan
All these problems affect each other so in order for them all to come out the best the all have to work together.
In order of the air population to get better we have to cut down or spread out the urban population.
In order to spread out the urban population. We have to have an unlimited land supply.
Finally in order to get the water plans we need and for water to circulate Dhaka needs intervention from other countries.
Environmental and climate change, swelling food and fuel prices, economic slow-down, terrorism, new migration flows, and the risk of increasing conflicts over limited resources generally have a regional dimension. Most of the world’s conflicts occur in regions where at least one of the neighbouring countries is also affected by conflict. There is a need for closer regional cooperation on such questions with a view to preventing different types of humanitarian crisis.
But SAARC has not been able to build such partnership among the member countries like the dispute between India and Pakistan over Kashmir, the Tamil Tigers in Sri Lanka, the dispute between Pakistan and Afghanistan over militants issue, the conflict between India and Bangladesh about border issues, human and drug trafficking, cross-border terrorism, water sharing and so on.
